Kylie Dowell of Dowell Solutions is an ‘Approved Provider’ and the ‘Nominated Trainer’ by WorkSafe ACT that meets the qualification and industry experience requirements set out by WorkSafe ACT.

The course runs for 5 days, either consecutively or spread over a few weeks, depending on whether it’s a public or corporate session. We deliver the course face-to-face ensuring an engaging and interactive learning environment.

What are the dates and times for the HSR Training course?
Courses run on selected dates, typically from 9 am to 5 pm. You’ll receive specific dates and timings in your registration confirmation.

Where is the course held?
Our courses are held at selected private training rooms with full location and parking information provided in your welcome email.

What should I bring to the training?

  • Lunch or plan to buy locally
  • A travel mug (optional)
  • PPE for workplace inspection, if advised

Is there a dress code or PPE requirement?
Dress comfortably in business casual attire, as we want you to feel at ease during practical activities. PPE may be required for the workplace inspection; the instructor will advise of what is required depending on the location of the inspection. Therefore, if you are travelling to the course it would be worthwhile to pack your PPE just encase.

Are meals provided during the course?
Tea, coffee, and snacks are provided. Lunch can be brought from home or purchased from nearby cafes.

What resources and support materials are provided to participants during the course?
Participants receive a full copy of the ACT Work Health and Safety Act 2011, detailed participant notes, a HSR Survival Student Pack, access to online resources for after the course and access to a private support group. These resources are designed to support you during the course and beyond.

What is the HSR Survival Student Pack?
The HSR Survival Student Pack includes practical tools, stationary items and refreshments. This pack helps reinforce key course learnings and provides quick access to essential items to support you during your HSR course.

What’s the process for enrolling in an upcoming course or booking for my team?

What certification will I receive, and what does it qualify me to do?
Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a ACT  Health and Safety Representative (HSR) Training Certificate of Attendance. This certificate affirms your training as an HSR, giving you the authority to act on WHS matters in your current workplace where you were nominated as a HSR.

How long is the HSR certificate valid for?
Once completed, your certification remains valid. However, we recommend a refresher course every few years to stay up-to-date with any legislative changes.

What happens if I miss a session?
100% attendance is required to fulfil certification requirements. If you miss a session, please contact us to discuss options for rescheduling.

Is there ongoing support or additional resources available after I complete the training?

Is the training tax-deductible?
Generally, HSR training costs are tax-deductible as they relate directly to your role. Consult a tax professional for specific advice. If you are doing this course due to being an elected HSR for your workplace, your employer is responsible for paying the course fee and any reasonable costs associated with your attending as per WHS Act 2011 s72b.

Do I have to be a union member to be a HSR?
No, a HSR does not have to be a union member. There is nothing in the WHS legislation that stipulates that HSR’s are to be union members. It may be the unions preference, however there is no legal obligation under the WHS legislation to have a HSR that is a union member.

Can I bring my own HSR examples to discuss during the course?
Yes, we encourage participants to share real-life scenarios for group discussion and to help contextualise the learning experience.

Do I need computer skills to complete the HSR course?
No, you do not need to be good on computers to do the HSR course and you can still be a very successful HSR.

How can I give feedback on the course?
We value feedback to continually improve our courses. Forms are provided at the end of each course.
